Northern Exposure is an exploration of choral music new and old from the regions of Northern Europe and Canada. We’ve included the modern compositions of Ola Gjeilo (Norway), Ēriks Ešenvalds (Latvia), Kim André Arnesen (Norway), Pärt Usberg (Estonia), as well as Jean Sibelius’ immortal hymn Be Still, my soul (“Finlandia”).
Estonia, Finland, Norway, and Sweden are rich with choral folk traditions and we will present a sampling of these in their original languages. The British Isles will be well represented with a stunning arrangement of the Scottish folksong Loch Lomond and the rollicking Irish Folk Tune Follow me down to Carlow.
Finally, we draw from the vast Canadian choral library to include an original work by Eleanor Daley, an arrangement of a French Canadian folksong from Quebec by Donald Patriquin, and an original, collaborative piece based on a Native Canadian Mi’kmaq chant by Kim Baryluk called Warrior.
